Nivalis Nights has a defined story, with choices that affect your relationships and the route you take through it. Talking to residents is a central part of the game, alongside managing your business.

Relationships grow through choices

Interactions and character side quests can lead to friendship, rivalry, business partnerships or romance. Your decisions change dialogues and side-quest outcomes. Business relationships can also affect opportunities and prices; the developers give repeat purchases from a vendor as one example.

The main stories have intended endings, but the path to them can differ. Pay attention to what a resident asks and decide how you want to respond, rather than treating every conversation as a transaction.

When choosing a response, read the immediate request alongside what you already know about that resident. Pursue the side quest if you want to learn more about their goals; business contacts and personal relationships can lead to different opportunities.

If you are comparing story choices, make a manual save before the conversation. The official FAQ confirms manual saving during gameplay, but does not promise that every decision can be undone later in the story.

A few people to recognize

Thaddeus Carmunis is an older business owner nearing retirement. Banor is introduced as a potential ally in your working life. Salt Pete is a robot ferry operator near the docks, known for his straw hat and arguments with the other harbour robots.

These introductions do not imply that every named character is a romance option.

Chess and other challenges

The game includes NPC challenges and a chess tournament. The October 1 patch corrected castling when the king is in check. Under normal chess rules you cannot castle out of check, so update the game if that interaction behaved incorrectly in the launch version.

For a chess match, first check whether your king is under attack before planning a castling move. The patch fixes that rule interaction; it does not provide a guaranteed winning sequence for the tournament. If an illegal move still occurs after updating, capture the position in a screenshot and include the moves leading to it in a support ticket.
